Basic explanation of bending process

Jun 14, 2025

The bending process of sheet metal processing is the process of using pressure equipment and specialized molds to process metal sheets into three dimensions. The tonnage and size of pressure equipment bending machines vary depending on the quality, thickness, length, and width, as well as the shape and angle of the formed product,The height, shape, and V-amplitude of the upper and lower molds are also different, and their special mold shapes are also different.

The bending process can be divided into three categories: local bending, closed bending, and embossed bending.

1. Local bending: The methods for right bending and obtuse bending are to choose an upper mold below 88 degrees and a lower mold with V=12t.

2. Closed bending: Choose the method of 90 degree bending with right and obtuse angles. Select V=6~12t for the near bend mold.

3.embossed  bending: 90 degree upper mold is used for right angle bending.  The bending lower mold is selected with V=5-6t.

To increase the bending speed during sheet metal processing, gear switches can be operated in a single or continuous state, but for safety reasons, they are usually only used in a single action. When bending long parts, the angle in the middle is usually very large. We can adjust the CC axis to change the angle in the middle to achieve the same angle as the left and right sides. During the bending process, attention should also be paid to the principle of central bending, which is an important prerequisite for ensuring bending accuracy.

One end of the bending machine is not allowed to bend, as this angle is not good and may damage the machine. It is not allowed to cut off the power supply in a short period of time. Shut down the oil pump normally. This can save electricity costs, avoid reprocessing the production area during work, save time, and improve crop production efficiency.

To complete the product or stop working, first place the lower mold in the lowest position, then turn off the oil pump, and then turn off the power. If this batch of products has been completed, the mold needs to be removed, placed back on the mold rack, and returned to the operation panel.

The above is a basic explanation about the bending process in sheet metal processing.
