Principles Of Sheet Metal Product Design

Aug 18, 2025

Generally speaking, the following four principles are required when designing sheet metal parts.

  • The principle of uniform product thickness: Sheet metal is a material with uniform thickness, which should be taken into account in structural design, especially in areas with many bends, as it can easily cause uneven thickness.
  • The principle of easy flattening is that sheet metal products are processed from sheet metal. Before processing, the raw material is flat. Therefore, when designing sheet metal parts, all bends and slopes must be able to unfold on the same plane without interference with each other.
  • The thickness of sheet metal parts varies from 0.03 to 4.00mm in various specifications, and the thickness should be selected according to the actual function of the product. On the premise of meeting strength and function, the thinner the better. For most products, the thickness of sheet metal parts should be controlled below 1.00mm.
  • Sheet metal products that comply with the principles of processing technology should comply with the processing technology and be easy to manufacture. Products that do not comply with the processing technology cannot be manufactured, which is an unqualified design.
